Jake and I have a problem. A big problem. But the first step to recovery is admitting we have a problem.
We're autoholics. We are addicted to cars.
Like I said, we have a problem.
A few weeks ago Jake came home from work and said "Looks like the Mustang is due for its first oil change (he drove a company car during his Chicago rotation so the Mustang only had 6000 miles). Guess it's time for a new car." We laughed and laughed at his joke. But a few days later the outrageous idea started transforming to sound advice.
Let me explain. We bought the Mustang as a fun commuter car and our plan was to save up and buy a "ghetto booty" old truck.
Back Story: When I was growing up we had an old 1984 Chevy C10 Silverado truck. It was red and well-loved. We referred to it as the "old red truck" in our house. Well when I was learning to drive it my dad would say, "Don't forget when you go around a corner you still have a long truck bed behind you. You need to remember to make room for it." I was like "ya, it has a big ghetto booty." My dad loved that joke and the name just stuck. All these years later we still refer to the old truck as "ghetto booty!"
Our plan was to buy a ghetto booty so that when Jake bought a dirt bike he would have something to haul it in, but also when people in the ward would ask if Jake could come help them move something with his truck he could just toss them the keys and let them borrow it. Well, the plan seemed great at the time. The thing we weren't expecting was Jake raking up all the overtime in Chicago and buying his dirt bike years earlier than we had planned. Plus his friend Jordan bought a dirt bike this past winter and Jake finally had someone to ride with! So we welcomed a 2004 KTM 250SX Dirt Bike to our family.
After Jake bought his dirt bike we reevaluated our vehicle situation. The Mustang is a lot of fun, but besides fun it doesn't serve any other purpose. We started discussing all these different scenarios and options. Finally Jake came across a deal on the Ford Escape, which can tow 3500 lbs. It is more fuel efficient than the Mustang and the insurance is less. Luckily Jake gets great deals as a Ford employee. Apparently this job is a good fit for our family.
So we traded in the Mustang for an Escape.... before its first oil change.
Here's our ever-growing list of motorized vehicles we've had from our 7 years of marriage...
- 1992 Buick Lesabre
- 2008 MazdaSpeed3
- 2004 Yamaha Vino Scooter
- 1995 Jeep Wrangler
- 2002 Dodge Durango
- 2001 Yamaha WR426F Dirt Bike
- 2012 Ford Fusion
- 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan
- 2014 Ford Mustang
- 2015 Ford Escape
- 2004 KTM 250SX Dirt Bike
Jake is currently looking for a trailer, but in the mean time Jordan has been coming to our house and picking Jake up on their way out. Here they were headed to Bundy Hill Off Road Park. I think it's so much safer to go riding out here rather than Utah. The riding is on specified trails inside a gated area. It's not like the west desert where you can ride for days and see no one. I know that if anything happens there are lots of people around to help out.
Jordan needed to empty his gas can so he could fill it up with high octane fuel. Luckily he found a use for the lower octane fuel... haha!
Before they left I told them I only had one rule: take pictures! I'm totally obsessed with photos and luckily Jake indulges my neurotic compulsion.
Here's a video Jake took of Jordan:
This weekend they rode at Supercoops MX Facility - a dirt motocross track. I forgot to remind them of my rule, so hopefully I'll get a photo next time. *hint hint*

I love that you traded it in before changing the oil! Captain Awesome's AC went out a few weeks ago, so naturally he started shopping for new cars (as I'm sure you realized when he started texting you.) Unfortunately, we just can't decide what fits our "needs". My car is nearly dead, but maybe has 10 years left so we're stuck in the rift where you keep repairing because you think it's just a small repair, but maybe we should let it die at the hands of a teen somewhere, but maybe not.
Oh...I'm super sad. A practical car instead of a Mustang? I just don't know...
Wow, we have owned the same number of vehicles as you guys (and have been married 17 years)!
I'm sure Christy really does want me to buy a fun car now :)

WOW. I need you to come down here and rub off on us. We've had the same one car for our 14 years of marriage (plus a year before we got married). We keep needing to replace it, putting in a couple hundred bucks in repairs, patting ourselves on the back, and then waiting for it to break down again. We just can never quite bring ourselves to take the plunge. Maybe we need to work for a car company next!
And I remember your dad's truck - loved that old thing!
