There are many articles on teaching kids what to do if they get lost, like this one here. We talked about getting lost, staying put, asking another mom for help, repeating our mom's first and last name, and our phone numbers. The last thing we discussed was if we are lost, we can always pray to Heavenly Father for help and courage.
I accidentally bought window cling paper on Amazon (here) a few weeks ago. Instead of returning it, I thought I would find some way to use it. So for class I made each kid a cling with their phone number then little squares with each number on them. They practiced putting them in order on the window.
Then we used Shrinky Dinks (here) to make ID necklaces. I made the charms with their phone numbers the night before. I put two holes in them so they could wear them on a bracelet (I'm planning on making anklets for the twirls). I used clear spray sealer after they cooled down to help make them more durable. Then for preschool each kid got to decorate 2 shapes with "grown up" markers and we put them in the oven and watched them shrink!
Our friend's little girl just wants to go to preschool like her big brother, so they stayed this time and the little girls got to have their own little "preschool".
Another blog I came across suggested writing their name, phone number, and address on a paper and taping it on the wall next to their bed. They will stare at it when the are falling asleep and will be more likely to learn it. I really think that's how Scarlett learned the letters of her name (it's on her wall in big vinyl letters). So I made a paper with that info and we practice it at night. I sing our phone number with her to the tune of "Pop Goes the Weasel" cause I think it's easier to remember as a song rather than a bunch of numbers.
It was a fun day, but also very serious topic. I hope we don't get separated from our kids, but I want them to feel empowered if they ever find themselves alone.

We have it hanging in the kitchen at eye level for kids near the phone. I figured if they ever need to call 911 they'll be too panicked to remember our info.
Those ID necklaces are neat! I used to just stick an address label with our phone number on it onto the back of each kid. Classy.
