STEM Night

We went to Scarlett's school for a special STEM night.  The Ann Arbor Hands On Museum came and set up a bunch of experiments for the kids to try.  Such a cool afternoon for our family!

Scarlett made an anemometer.

Skye was a trouper!

The girls made butterflies and then we put them on an electromagnet that made them flutter.

Making washer bridges and star constellations:

Hair net parachutes:

Learning about fingerprints:

Baking soda and white vinegar balloons:

A perfect opportunity to wear this shirt, complete with Lego earrings!  Also, I saw this post from a Women in STEM page on FB, I think that the second girl kind of looks like me haha!

There's a big push for STEM to become STEAM.  Adding Art into the equation.  A lot of people view engineering as a very left-brained activity.  But I've always thought engineering is a very creative field.  I think that the best engineers are those that think outside the box and are willing to view problems from different angles.  So I'm glad they're adding art/design into the mix because I think they work harmoniously together.  And by adding art/design you're pulling people into the technical fields that normally wouldn't be drawn to them.

How fun!

I totally agree about engineering being not just a left-brained activity. It takes a lot of creativity and imagination to understand how to apply principles and create something new.
