One of my favorite summer traditions is the Thunder Over Michigan Air Show (see 2016 & 2015). This year the Navy Blue Angels came over Labor Day Weekend (they only come every other year). Since it was a holiday they held 3 shows, plus 2 practices. We got to watch a LOT of airplanes that week. It was a backyard celebration! My aerospace enginerd heart was full of joy!
One of the days the girls used red blankets as superhero capes. They ran around and tried to race the airplanes.
Look at these photos we took from our yard! We're only like a few miles directly north of Willow Run airport, so they circle around and fly right over our house.
Here's a video of 2 planes flying RIGHT over our house, I wish you could feel the vibrations from the sound while watching this video. It feels so much closer and intense in real life:
This video is the full formation flying in front of our house (I realize I keep saying "wow" in the videos, sorry for the annoying commentary!)
During the Saturday show we posted an invite on our ward FB page to bring a lawn chair and enjoy the show. We had a ton of otter pops and sidewalk chalk. The only bummer was of all the shows we saw, that show was the least spectacular (due to the low cloud ceiling), but still pretty cool. Next time I'll do a few things different, like borrow a ham radio so we can listen to the pilots talking (something Grandpa Seaver would support - K6GZV!).
I realized I didn't have a cool airplane shirt, so I bought these funny tees. I was impressed at Scarlett's "sonic boom" pictures. For the record the pilots are not allowed to break the sound barrier in the air show, but we did teach our kids a little about the doppler effect during the show. Our poor kids! haha!

I love fly-bys! We used to live going to Airforce BYU games in Colorado Springs because they do amazing flyovers there. Riding in a jet like that was on my bucket list, but I'm too old now. I can barely handle Lagoon anymore. I did discover that while you can't ride in U.S. jets, there are some old Russian ones in California that give rides for hire
WOW!!
Jenni,it doesn't have to be a jet to be exciting, my first time to fly without my instructor was heart pounding, you just need to learn to fly, you would love it. We love to watch air shows, Grandpa loved to go to Hill when they had one. Happy Thanksgiving. Grandma
I almost had a heart attack once at dinner when we were eating outside and a jet flew by, low and right above us. Hahaha! How fun for the girls to see that up close.
Grandma Betty, I remember once when Grandpa took me up in his plane!! :-) I didn't realize you had a pilot license as well - so cool!
