The Sands of Lake Michigan

Right before school started Laura said they were planning a day trip to Lake Michigan.  So we invited ourselves along!  I've never been to the beach here even though it's less than 3 hours away.  Pregnancies and newborns made the beach trip sound miserable.  But not this summer!  Woot woot!

The night before the trip I was having bad allergies so I had to take a double dose of Benadryl.  I was sooo loopy and out of it.  It doesn't do that to me every time, but often enough that Jake has a name for it: Jenadryl.  I went upstairs to brush my teeth.  While I was supposed to be getting my toothbrush ready I took off all my clothes, then I just stared in the mirror and said "why am I naked?"  haha!  I was so out of it.  Well instead of taking my Friday night pills, I accidentally took my Saturday morning pills.  NOO!!  It wouldn't be that bad except one of my morning pills makes me WIRED.  I wish I would have made myself throw everything up.  Instead I took nyquil (with the benadryl) yet I was awake for half the night.  It was awful.  Luckily I was able to sleep on the drive to the coast.  What a silly mistake to make!

We got to the beach when it was a little chilly.  We got a great place to set up our little day camp.  By noon it was really sunny and warm.  The beach was clean and the sand was soft.  A perfect beach day!
Side note: What makes Lake Michigan so "great"?  It is only slightly smaller than the state of West Virginia - it's huge!!!  It's the 5th largest lake in the world and the only Great Lake located completely in the US.  Lake Michigan has many beaches. The region is often referred to as the "Third Coast" of the United States. The sand is often soft and off-white, known as "singing sands" because of the squeaking noise (caused by high quartz content) it emits when walked upon. The water is clear and salt-free. And in the winter there are waves large enough of people to surf on!
The girls LOVED playing in the sand.  All of them.  Sand was everywhere!  But they had a blast.  It was a little gross to change Skye's poopy, sandy diaper... but she didn't seem to mind.

Skye took a little nap in my arms.  In one photo you'll see I had to fix my swim suit before I could wear it that day.  I was planning on sewing in the car but I slept instead..heehee.  It had been many years since I had been to a beach, so I wasn't exactly sure what to pack.  If you know me, you know I like to be prepared for EVERYTHING.  But I learned a lot about what to bring and not bring.  Mostly in the way of snacks.  I don't think I realized how hard it would be to eat without sand on your hands.  Or how sand would get everywhere!

Berlyn and Jake spent most of the day with the older girls in the water, along with Laura and Steve and their kids.  Skye and I spent the day in the sand.  There was one moment when Jake walked Jaide to the beach and sent her up to me.  It was like 10 feet but she looked away and got lost.  Jake found her like 1 minute later, but oh my goodness it felt like forever!  I was trying so hard not to panic, my mind was racing through a million scenarios.  I hate that feeling!  Lesson learned.  The part that scares me was how vigilant we were being with safety, and still this little incident happened.  Scary.

Despite that one little hiccup, we had a wonderful day.  We made tons of memories and the girls ask me if we can go back to the beach ALL. THE. TIME.  haha!  (if you give a mouse a cookie...)  Maybe we will go next summer.  Hopefully by then we will have finally cleaned up all the sand from this trip!

They were all so tired and quiet on the drive home.  The adults got to work on our crossword puzzle in peace.  The girls crowned Berlyn the queen of the car.  And I found a clever way to make it so Skye could watch the iPad, but not clever enough... she cracked the screen with her little feet!

Some funny things the girls said at the end of summer....

  • While on a walk we saw a dead bird in the road, they had to tell everyone about it for two days straight!  haha! Maybe I should be more concerned about this... Speaking of concerned....
  • Siena: "knock knock" (who's there?) "bum paste" (bum paste who?) "You don't have to cry about it cause bum paste is made from babies!! .... It's only made from dead babies."  *awkward*  (I think she was making a joke, realized it sounded morbid, so she wanted to make it better.  But we had a talk about how we don't joke about dead people.)
  • Siena to Mom: "I can see your black hair growing in, it doesn't match your white hair"
  • I told the girls I was going to a baby shower, Siena: "I want to see the baby in the shower!!"
  • Jaide: "I think I love you Mom" (uhh.. thanks?  Turns out she says this a lot to mean that she really loves me.)
  • Jaide threw a knife in sink: "yay Jacksquat!!!" (Jackpot)
  • Jaide: "When Mom was married she wore a dress and Dad wore...... Man clothes."
  • After I explained how women get periods, Jaide: "I don't want to do that when I get bigger" (no one does sweetie)
  • Scarlett from the backseat while we were driving: "Dad look, those hills look like perfect jumps for our bikes!" *dad pride moment*
  • Scarlett: "Can I have some beef turkey?" (Beef jerky)
  • Scarlett: "Can you make me a jungle room so I can climb around any time I feel climby?"
  • Scarlett: "Did you know teenagers can drive? That's crazy they are just kids! Just big kids!" hahaha!!!!

We lived right on lake Michigan in Wisconsin. It is lovely! People would surf our beach in the winter, which is crazy because it is SO COLD. I'm glad you guys got to go! It is rough when the kids are little...hard to get out and do much of anything without putting yourself through a big ordeal. :-)
