Total Eclipse of the Yard

This blog post is best read while listening to this epic 1983 hit.

Remember the solar eclipse?  Aug 21, 2017?  Well we were able to enjoy some of it from our backyard.  I invited a few friends over to enjoy the view and the summer heat with a water party.

We used our solar glasses to watch the eclipse unfolding.  I put Skye's sunglasses on so she could get a glasses picture too - she did not think that was cute.  We were at the library a few weeks ago and signed up for a reading club.  In our box they gave us these solar glasses.  I'm so grateful because it turns out they were a hot commodity!  People were waiting in lines all over town and most places ran out.  Laura had some too, so we all took turns viewing the crescent sun.  I think the girls thought it was a bit anticlimactic.  Thank goodness for otter pops and sprinklers!

Laura and Camille brought their cereal box pinhole cameras.  SCIENCE!!!!!!  I loved learning about this stuff in optics.  It's pretty much how the human eye works!

They worked great!  My neighbor was in his yard so I invited him over for otter pops.  He let me use his welding mask to look at the eclipse and I was able to get a photo through it.  The picture on the very left I was trying to get a picture but the sun it too bright, but if you notice there's like a reflection or glare or something in the picture on the back of our house that is the shape of the eclipse.  Cool!  It never got dark here, just felt like it was overcast (only 83% of the sun covered).  But thankfully it wasn't overcast so we could enjoy the view.

Now we're just waiting for the solar eclipse of 2024, where the path of totality will be on the Michigan-Ohio border.  Woot woot!  :-)

Thanks for sharing! It's fun to keep up with family while I'm on the other side of the world
