I hosted book club at my house this month. We read "Sherlock Holmes: A Scandal in Bohemia" (I got to pick since it was at my house). We had like 10 ladies show up and had a great discussion. I love Sherlock. I've read them all and enjoy the movies. But right now I am on a BBC Sherlock kick. Wasn't the season 3 opener great! The montage of his clients and their random problems are actually references to a bunch of the mysteries from the book. And Jake really liked how he used a disguise in this episode (since that's a strength of the character in the book.) but I digress...
I waited til the girls were in bed to clean the kitchen, floors, and bathroom. I was scrambling to get it all organized. Laura brought her popcorn popper machine and we used coconut oil to pop the kernels - yum!
In "A Scandal in Bohemia" Sherlock tells
Watson that "You see, but you do not observe." He points out that Watson walks up the staircase every day yet has no idea how many stairs there are. I thought this was an interesting point so I decided to make a game of it. Before everyone came over I left out 10 different toys on the floor. During the evening I even moved them around and kind of kicked them so they were in the middle of the circle. Then after 2 hours I passed out pens and paper then took a blanket and covered it up. We had already discussed the see/observe passage so I brought it up again. Then I told them there were 10 toys they had all seen. But had they observed? Then I had them write down as many toys as they could remember. It worked perfectly! They commented on how they were staring at the toys during the conversation but now couldn't recall them. I think the most anyone got were 3! It was a relaxing evening with my friends - even if the twins made an appearance
at the end - I think we were laughing a little loud. ;-)

What a fun idea to test everyone on their observation skills. It's so true, I don't really observe many things. I love that you are doing book club; it was one of my most enjoyable activities with other women. And I do love to read. Just finished "My name used to be Mohammed". It's a fascinating read of a Muslim that joined the church. Our other "must-read" is Clayton Christensen's, "The Power of Everyday Missionaries". Also we loved the last blog about self feeding. I had to stop nursing all my babies around the age of 9 months because they would bite. Children at that age just want to chew on things I guess. We'll be praying for Jamie tomorrow and wearing T-shirts.
You actually discuss your books at book club? Weird. Most of our ladies don't even bother to read them. I think we just go to get out of the house and stay up late chatting. Also, I'm loving Sherlock, but I've only seen the first two episodes of the first season. My better half can't stay awake for them!
I love that you have a book club! I always tell my friends I'm too busy for their book clubs, and I'm not nearly as busy as you are! You're such a rock star. I'm so impressed. You do such a great job of doing all the things that help you to be a happy, well rounded mama for your cute girls. They're so blessed to have you!
I love that you go to book club! I never could, in Michigan, because JC always traveled and I couldn't find a sitter that had a car and I was always SO BUMMED that it never worked out. Sounds like a lot of fun!
