Siena's Heel Healed

Remember how Siena broke her foot?  Even though it was a waterproof cast we kept it dry.  When it got wet in the shower it became "too itchy" so we wrapped it in several bags every time she showered.  Even with all that tap and plastic it would get a little wet inside.  So she used a long glow stick as her scratching stick.

Finally her 3 weeks were up.  We went back to the doctor.

The cast lady showed me how safe the cutting saw was by using it on my arm.  No blood!  It helped Siena to see that it didn't hurt me.  She didn't like how loud it was but she was so brave.

Then the lady let the twirls each use the tool to pry the cast open.

The cast lady got the twirls crayons to color the table paper with while they waited for the doctor.  She wins the award for being the coolest ever.  She even drew a butterfly for them.  The nurses in that office just loved the twirls.  They kept coming by and talking to them and saying how cute they were.  Sometimes it takes someone out of my normal circle to help me remember how cute and little they are, plus their little high voices, so sweet!  They were well behaved and polite (thank goodness it was a good day!)

After her cast came off there was a bleeding wound on her heel - the same wound from the night before her xray when she poked her foot.  It just seemed weird that it would still be bleeding after 3 weeks.  The doctor agreed that it should have healed by then.  So he told us to come back in 3 weeks and follow up and make sure that it finally healed.

A few nights later I was putting a clean bandage on her owie and noticed a tiny little abnormality poking out of it.  Really I think it was a tender mercy that I saw anything at all.  I took Siena to the bathroom, pinned her down, and used my tweezers to clean out her wound.  I pulled out a piece of glass!!!!  Oh my goodness!!!!  She had that in her foot for over 3 weeks!  Poor girl!!!!  I felt so bad!

Remember her xray?  There was some confusion over "chipped bone" in the heel but the doctor wasn't concerned about it.  At first I thought her wound was from a piece of sharp eggshell.  Eggshell wouldn't show up on the xray, but guess what... glass does!  Poor thing, the evidence was there the whole time but we just didn't understand it.  You can see the glass chip in two xrays.  Also, if you look at the navicular bone you can see the top of it is wavy - like a squiggle.  It should be smooth and round.  That squiggle is why she wore her cast.  He said the bone would heal just fine, but since she had so much pain right there he wanted to support it and give it time to get better.

I took her to her follow up appointment (it was immediately after ballet, hence the adorable outfits).  Her foot is "feeling much better now, mom" but she still won't put weight on her heel.  He said that it is probably just habit since her foot's been injured most of 2017.  He gave us the all clear.  If she is still limping in a month then we will go back and he'll do an ultrasound to check for any glass fragments that may be in her foot.  Hopefully that's not the case!  I remind her to walk on her foot several times a day, but she doesn't seem to be in pain anymore.  Hopefully she'll start walking on it soon.

Brave little girl! So glad you found the glass! Adorable girls, look like spring flowers. Carl and Karry took me to dinner for an early birthday, 2 days early but very thoughtful and so yummy! love Grandma

Oh I'm so glad you got the glass out! I have a scar from the accident that was always red and bothered. And then like more than 15 years after the accident it got really bothered and I was picking at it and a chunk of glass came busting out. CRAZY! It all feels so much better now. Anyway. I feel her pain! Hope Siena's heel finishes healing up soon!
