Big Girl Bed

Lately Jake and I have been trying to call Scarlett a "big girl" instead of a "baby".  Part of that was deciding to transition her to a Big Girl Bed.  Plus she's getting really good at climbing up the side of crib. So Jake got his tools out last Saturday and he and Scarlett installed the toddler rail.  She helped hold the screws and turn the screw driver.  The next morning Jake went to get her from her room and all she could say was "bed broken!" he reminded her how they used tools to change the bed.  Once she remembered that, she seemed fine with it.

Nighttime doesn't seem to be a problem, but nap time hasn't gone as smoothly.  I have a child lock thing on her door knob so she can't open her door.  But I can hear her on the monitor doing all sorts of stuff in her room when she should be sleeping.  Sometimes she shoves books under the door, sits in her rocking chair, rearranges her books, turns her lamp on/off, etc.  I am hoping the novelty factor of the big girl bed will wear off and she will continue taking naps (I'm not ready to give those up!)

As you can see in the picture, we had to clip a blanket on top of her bed - "a tunnel!" and her little unicorn projects stars on to it at night.  She loves stars!   She loves to sing Twinkle Twinkle with me at night too.  What a sweetie!

Yesterday when she and I were in the shower she bent down to get something then stood up under my belly.  Like she got stuck under my belly shelf!  It surprised us both.  :-)

This morning my PJ shirt wasn't covering the bottom of my huge belly.  She kept pointing to my exposed skin and saying "mommy - a hole!"

She loves to say "hi" and "bye" to everyone and everything (like - "hi slide" or "bye pillow") and she loves to give hugs and tickles.  This morning when we went in the garage she gave the car a hug.  She will also randomly air tickle something as we drive by it.  Silly girl!

Jake took her to Home Depot the other day.  She wouldn't leave the house til she had a "bow!" for her hair.  That's my girl!!!  She also loves her toe nails painted.

I couldn't find her one afternoon.  She was in her room hiding in her storage bin.  When I walked in she jumped up and yelled "boo!"

She's been playing so well with her dolls lately and points out babies at the store.  She and Jake went on a walk with her doll in a baby stroller.  She would push the doll for a few min, then stop to adjust her if she slid down.  Then occasionally she would stop to give the doll a drink from her little bottle.  SO CUTE!

I love this girl so much!  She's such a sweetie.  At night when we watch TV she'll cuddle up to me and hold my hand.  This morning she put lotion on my back.  She's my little buddy.  I know that the next few months are going to be rough for all of us, but I hope that she always knows how much I love her.

What a cutie! She's such a sweet, funny little girl. She'll definitely have a bit of an adjustment to not being the only child, but I think she's going to make a wonderful big sister! I sure love my big sisters--nothing better!

She is going to be a great help with your little ones. Already she likes to be the little mother. Can't wait to see you all. Hang in there---you're doing great.
So today, we had our monthly girls luncheon (but Dad came because he was off work). The girls all started confessing about sneaking out at night without us knowing it; did Jacob ever do that? I'm just wondering.

It will be an adjustment, but she'll do great. :-)

One transition thing I read, after my kids were all born so I never got to test this advice, was to sometimes have people watch the baby for you instead of the toddler. I remember a dear sweet friend taking my older boys to the park a few times after M was born. It was nice to have a break from them. But it also would have been nice to feed M and leave him with a friend for an hour while I went to the park with the boys, so they could have a little mom time. Plus he was a colicky screaming nightmare, and it would have been lovely to take a break from that. :-)

Jami said I cannot rock Scarlett to sleep for her naps while I'm there- she thinks it will ruin her sleep routine. I guess I will pack my duct tape then......

Judging by the first photo, she definitely has plenty of bows to choose from when heading out for trips to the hardware store!

As for napping, I'm impressed she still goes down at all. My kids all gave that up by 18 mos. I say, if she stays in her room and quietly entertain herself, who cares if she's sleeping? Unless needing to monitor her is keeping you awake. I used to give my toddlers "quiet time" in the afternoon so I could nap with the current baby. They didn't sleep, but I did!
