The past week has been a crazy blur. The girls are eating every 3 hours. They sleep pretty well between feedings. Sometimes we have to wake one of them up so they eat at the same time. All of my feedings are tandem style. It's so much faster to feed them at the same time. Then occasionally we top them off with pumped milk (we haven't had to use formula for the past few days) and I pump after each feeding to help increase my supply (since preemies aren't strong enough to empty all of the milk). I have a twin feeding log book that we use to track everything. There's no way that I could remember who ate on what side and when. I switch them each feeding - left or right side. I'm so glad my milk supply is sufficient and I hope it continues to ramp up. My supply was such a big issue for the first 3 months of Scarlett's life - it's so nice to not have that added stress.
Midnight Feeding
The girls sleep in their own cribs in their bedroom. The hospital told us that they really recommend keeping them apart while sleeping. They have had babies cover the other one's mouth with their hand - it's a hazard. So we decided to not take any chances. I know that most people keep their newborn in their bedroom, but it just doesn't work for us. Especially cause I have my mom help with nighttime feedings - that would be a little awkward in our bedroom. Plus I think I sleep better without the babies squeaking next to me all night.
They look really similar but we can still tell them apart. Besides the weight difference, Siena's hair is darker and 3/4" long. Jaide's hair is about 1/4" long. Siena's head is slightly cone shaped cause she was in the birth canal whereas Jaide has a round head (Siena's is getting more and more round each day). Each day they get more and more identical looking. Hopefully we figure out a full proof system for keeping them straight before they get too similar looking.
During the day we lay them in the portable crib in the living room.
Jami flew in on Tuesday. It's so great to have 4 adults for 3 babies. Plus Scarlett just adores her Aunt Jami. Jami and I have some craft projects to work on this next week. Hopefully we get them done soon so I can post some pictures of the twin's room.
Jake and I have enjoyed how much more relaxed we are with the twins than we were with Scarlett. Things feel a lot more natural and a whole lot less stressful. We are enjoying them in a different way then we were able to with Scarlett.
Hiccuping together.
I love sleeping in my bed on my back! It feels like I'm enveloped in clouds of blissful and relaxing joy. I can't believe how rested I feel when I wake up - even though it's only been a 3 hour chunk of sleep. Yay!
How did they fit in me???
We had a wonderful Mother's Day today. Jake bought me a pink plant for our front yard. He even planted it yesterday and I had no idea. He said this way I will remember our first Mother's Day in our house and with 3 girls every time it blooms it's pink flowers. What a thoughtful sweetie. I love that boy!!!
Scarlett seems so grown up (and ginormous) to me. When I change her diaper I have to pinch her squishy cheeks - it looks so different from the twins's boney bums. She has been talking a lot more too. I think it's cause Grammy and Aunt Jami don't understand her routine so she has to explain what she wants.
Scarlett is seriously addicted to Team Umizoomi. She now asks for specific episodes by name. Yikes! The rest of us are so sick of the show. In fact both my mom and Jami have said they are excited for this next week cause there are new episodes of the show. haha!
Scarlett figured out how to do a somersault this week! She is so crazy! After she figured it out she asked "mom turn" so I got on the floor and did one for her. I'm guessing that OB - who told me to not even push the stroller - would not be impressed with me. My mom, Jami, and Jake all scolded me after. I have to really force myself to take it easy cause the pain meds work so well I feel great during the day. But man I pay for it in the evening. I need to stop doing stuff like that if I'm ever going to heal! Oops!
I'm not sure that I could do a somersault now, and I have not just given birth. I can see trying without thinking and then really hurting myself though!
So glad Jami is out there to take care of Scarlett--I know how the little baby loves her big baby!
I read all of this and forgot to comment, but for blog postings this significant, you deserve some comments. So now you know it's been read an thoroughly enjoyed. I love how Jaide was winking at me in the hiccup video. So cute.
Way to go on the blog updates. I'm impressed with two newborns that you found time. I just have one and can't get it together. It's so fun reading about your girls and btw, Jer and I totally agree about not keeping babies in your room. My kids are all such noisy sleepers, we'd never get any rest. Good luck. I think about you all the time and hope things are going well. It sounds like your doing awesome.
Newborn twins easier than a single?! Maybe you should go for triplets next time. It might even out the male-to-female ratio. Give it some thought. ;o)
Who knew that baby hiccups could be so entertaining? I'll have to have my #2 watch Scarlett's somersault video. We just discovered this week that she is somersault impaired. Tragic. BTW, I wouldn't worry about messing up your healing with somersaults...though backward somersaults might be problematic.
