Paint It Black

We spent all weekend working on our home (basically the first of maaaany weekends spent on home projects I'm sure).  We decided that the first thing we needed to do was to change the locks.  They only gave us one house key at closing and who knows home many others are floating around.  So changing the locks gave us added security and peace of mind.  Since we were changing the hardware anyways, we thought it would be nice to paint the front door.  And the sconces so they matched.  Luckily we decided to stop there since these "quick" projects took way longer than expected.

Front Door: Before and After

(note: we haven't change the hardware on the glass door to satin nickel yet because we have to special order it)

Garage Lights: Before and After

This Rolling Stones tune was the official anthem of our weekend project (and it's been in my head ever since).  Listen to the first sentence and see if you can guess why.  (PLEASE DON'T MIND THE GRUESOME PICTURE...)
We made several trips to Home Depot and Lowe's.  Especially after we lost one of the four bolts for the sconces.  Classic.  Bottom Line... Lowe's: Fail.  Home Depot: Winning.

This is how Scarlett spent most of the day.  While I was painting, Jake was on baby duty.  Then we would switch and he worked on the lawn.  Apparently... Jake : new tools = Jenni : new craft stuff.  Who knew?

Headquarters:

I used the painter's tape to hold on the silly "one size fits most" gloves:

Snort Sauce bought me an awesome DIY book for my bday.  It suggested using a grocery bag to cover the plastic paint tray.  After you're done, just pour the extra back into the can, let the bag dry, turn it inside out, and throw away!  I used a new bag for each coat.  It may look messy, but the clean up was a breeze!  Thanks Snort!

Jake came outside and found me like this.  My hands hurt soooooo bad after going through 4 cans of spray paint!  But I think it was worth it!  :-)

It looks great Jenni! The first thing that Willey and I did was put in new locks and new toilet seats! Both of which I haven't regretted! I never would have thought to paint the door and lights, but everything looks so nice! I can't wait to see how your beautiful home looks when you're all settled. Good luck with all the work you have ahead of you :)

Ah, home improvements, the gift that keeps on giving!

I am totally with you ladies on the new locks thing--uh, too creepy otherwise!

Wow- never even thought to change the locks, even though I only got one copy of the keys and one garage door opener with my house. Huh. After I got my house, the people at Home Depot started saying they recognized me because I was in sooooo much. We got onto friendly terms. Have fun with that!

I've been raising sprinkler heads this weekend and thought of you guys. Welcome to the club! So how soon do you think you'll have Scarlett mowing the lawn?
