Skye Physical Therapy

Poor baby Skye, at her first birthday she wasn't crawling.  Her only mode of transportation was to scoot on her bum.  And by scoot, it was more of a lean forward then sit back up, lean forward then back up... each time moving just an inch or so.  I was impressed at her flexibility though.  I took a video to show her maneuver.  It took her about 3 minutes to reach her target, instead of making you sit through that I sped the movie up so you can see her move in fast forward (warning, their voices are reeaallly squeaky on this video):

When we went for her 1 year checkup, Dr. Tosto said she wasn't too worried about the crawling as much as she was worried that Skye doesn't like to even bear weight on her legs.  We were going to be leaving Michgian for the summer so Dr. Tosto suggested that we go to physical therapy just to make sure things are ok and so I don't have to worry all summer until we get back.  When she put the order in for PT it said "happy, healthy lazy baby girl"  haha lazy?!?  I prefer the word "chill" cause she really is just chill.  Also, if you think about it, most of the winter she was super sick.  So by the time she felt well enough to move around she was so chunky her untrained muscles didn't know what to do!

So off to physical therapy... We had 5 sessions.  I was amazed at how each time we went she learned a new trick.  She figured out how to sit up, pull to her knees, and eventually crawl!  I told the therapist that she was magic!  She just said "well, it's not rocket science."  I know it's not, if it was rocket science it would make sense to me!  haha!  But really I enjoyed watching her teach Skye.  I would try to teach Skye how to crawl by putting her on all fours and forcing her through the motions.  The therapist would watch Skye play, see what she was naturally doing, then help her take her own motions and move a little closer to crawling.  It's like she pulled it out of her in a natural way.  Skye didn't love being forced to work out (does anyone?) but I brought a lot of snacks.

#WillWorkForFood.  Skye also liked all the fun toys they had to play with.  But she was pretty timid about new things that made her feel out of control.  But after a few repetitions she would realize that it wasn't hurting her and she would gain confidence.  The therapist commented many times on how smart she is and how fast she would catch on.  The therapist said Skye has really loose and flexible joints so that might make her feel unstable until her muscles get strong.  I told her we were ok with baby steps.  Literally.  ;-)

The first day we went (polka dot pants) Skye was really shy - even more than normal.  I was surprised at how "off" she was acting.  Towards the end of the session her forehead started feeling hot.  The therapist grabbed a thermometer and sure enough she had a fever of 102!  She started pulling at her ears so the doctor got us in that afternoon.  The doctor even said "oh, looks like she has an infection" cause of the way she was pulling at her ears, but when she checked them they were both clear!  The next day she woke up without a fever and seemed totally fine.  Weird.

Aunt Jami found this adorable Nike outfit for her.  The largest size they had was 12mo.  Skye outgrew it basically days after I took this picture!  haha!  In the top right photo you can see they put these blue shorts on her that are sewn together down the inseam.  It forces her hips to stay straight while crawling.  She did not appreciate that!  And the bottom left, sometimes it was just too much - she needed to take a break.

One night Skye woke up screaming.  I checked the dropcam and she was sitting up in her crib and her foot stuck in between the slats..  She had learned how to sit up that week and was practicing in her bed.  Plus I think it was just too dark for her to figure out how to lay back down.  She did that just a few more times before she adjusted to her new degree of freedom.

In the top left photo Skye was trying to crawl in the bathroom but her jammies kept slipping on the tile.  She eventually slid herself to the corner.  Nobody puts baby in the corner!  (except herself!)    Middle photos show her doing her home workouts.  Bottom left photo she will just lay down on the floor after moving.  Workouts are exhausting!  Bottom right photo she is crawling for a ball, but it shows how she sometimes gets her front foot caught underneath her other leg so she kind of crawl/scoots it forward.  haha!

We came home from PT one day and Skye crawled on her own!!!  This is one of her first times all alone:

After Skye's first birthday I decided it was time to wean her.  I slowly took away her remaining nursing sessions over three weeks.  I'm so glad my mom was in town because it was hard.  She would scream and throw her head back when she realized I wasn't going to nurse her.  Then she would move from screaming to a really emotional and sad cry like "mom, why aren't you nursing me??"  It was so hard to keep my resolve.  She's just such a sweetie!  But I didn't give in (most of the time).  It would take forever to rock her to sleep.  But eventually she figured out the new routine and adjusted just fine.  My mom left and I was still feeling bad about how sad Skye was without nursing.  But I found this card next to the rocking chair.  My mom wrote it for Skye.  :-)  I asked my mom where she found a nursing card - it was for medical nurses haha!  But it worked perfectly!  (PS I love that blanket that Amy sewed for Scarlett years ago!)

You can see in the middle picture that she's holding her binky.  Oh that binky.  When I weaned her I thought she might start using it.  Nope she doesn't like sucking on it at all.  BUT in that small window she got used to having it one her jammies.  She liked to play with it at night.  If I went to rock her she would look around til she found it in her room then point at it until I clipped it on her jammies.  Sometimes she would look at me and smile after like "good job mom."  Then in the morning she would hold it up at me until I unclipped it.  What does she do with the binky?  I'm so glad you asked.  She would use it more like a fidget spinner than a soother.  She would hold it in her hand a specific way, then hold the binky up to her head.  She would grab some hair with her thumb, pinch the hair against the binky and pull away from her head - over and over.  It's like she was combing her hair with the binky.  Silly girl.  When we went to Utah I decided it was a good time to stop the binky, since she was in a new place and she didn't really need it.  Since she didn't have a binky that first night she grabbed my thumb, held it in her hand, lifted it to her head, grabbed a lock of hair and pinched it against my thumb with her thumb and pulled it out - over and over.  No binky?  No problem.  Haha!  She did a good job of improvising.  Luckily over the next few nights she got over that habit.

She has a few other habits she likes to do while falling asleep.  She will put her hand up by my mouth when I'm rocking her so I can kiss it, then she will fall asleep.  She likes to pinch her own neck and my neck all the time when she is tired.  I think it's cause she wants to feel what a real neck feels like haha!  Sometimes she will kiss/suck on my chest, like she misses nursing.  When I rock her she often likes to face out towards the room and sometimes she'll push my hand away if I try to tickle her face.  Sassy!

The girls taught Skye how to growl like Grumple (I also love that Scarlett is dabbing!):

Look at those curls!  I love our little blue-eyed, curly blond Glauser girls!

One year checkup.  Using a tongue depressor to drum on her toy.  This girl loves a good beat!

This girl just loves the water.  She doesn't freak out when I put her ears in it either.

She is can say so many words and keeps adding new words each day!  She can say: ding, ok, uh oh, no, mom, dad, namnam (for food), thank you, hi.  When my mom was in MI we heard Skye say "I love you Grammy", seriously.  But even more than words spoken, she understands a ton of words, like: clap, hi, peekaboo, out, up, yay, love you, Skye, (all our names), etc...  She will often copy words we say like "apple" but hasn't really used them on her own.  She uses her little "bossy finger" to point at things she wants.  Here's a video of her playing "Ding Dong":

She LOVES chips, drinking from a straw, any squeezy, frozen yogurt, popsicles, and really anything that I'm eating she wants to eat.  She has so many teeth, she even has molars now.  She loves to watch TV with her sisters, she will laugh and clap at Peppa Pig.  She has figured out that objects have different purposes.  She will comb her hair if she finds a brush, put a shoe on her foot, use a spoon to pick up food, etc.  Her sisters love to help feed her squeezies.  The bottom left picture shows a random rash she had.  I thought for sure that it was molluscum.  After the nightmare we had getting rid of that last time.  I took her to the dr and it turns out it was just a rash from a virus that took a few weeks to clear up.

Here's a video of Skye feeding us.  I love how she chews the air after feeding me a bite.  Jake does the same thing when he feeds her!  haha!  She is always chatting.  I can't wait to find out all the things that she's thinking.

She will laugh when I scare her by running towards her and screaming.  I tried to get a video of this, but it's a bit shaky since I'm moving a ton.  She is so cute!!!
