Before I tell you about Skye's name... I have had a lot of people ask if Skye looks like her sisters when they were born. They all had their own look but with many similar features. I think Skye matches her sisters, but you can be the judge yourself:
All growing up I imagined what theme my kids' names would be. My mom's sisters were all letter K names. My own family is 3 C/K names and 3 J names (but sometimes we call Kandy Jandy). Kandy named her girls with the letter B. And all my Aunts named their kids after a letter theme as well. I just assumed that all families picked some sort of naming theme for their kids. Even when I met Jake's sisters I came up with a theme. I could easily remember Jenny's name (is that narcissistic?) but I wanted to remember his older sister's names and in order. So I came up with "Merry Christmas Caroling" for Mary, Christy, and Carolyn. Even when I grew up and realized I could do what I wanted I still liked the idea of a theme.
Fast forward to Jake and I naming the twirls. We realized that two of the names on our list were colors - and so was Scarlett's name! So the color theme was born. We picked color names that we liked - but we spelled them different than the actual color. It wasn't something that we premeditated - mostly just evolved over time. Though I do remember after Scarlett was born I saw a Christmas card on Christy's fridge from their family friends. That family used color names for their kids. So I guess the idea was planted in my brain way back then.
So now jump to this past fall when we found out that baby #4 was a girl. Jake and I began the search for another girl color name. We had only really one rule. I didn't want to pick a name with the same color we already had. That means no red, green, or yellow color names. I started looking up lists online for different options. There were many names (not all usable, but still fun):
Amber, Ebony, Hazel, Jade, Kelly, Ruby, Rose, Scarlet, Sienna, Sky, Violet, Auburn, Carmine, Cerise, Cinder, Claret, Clove, Clover, Coral, Crystal, Denim, Emerald, Garnet, Goldie, Henna, Indigo, Ivory, Lavender, Lila, Magenta, Maize, Olive, Pearl, Poppy, Rosy, Saffron, Sandy, Silver, Aqua, Azure, Blue, Caramel, Carnelian, Honey, Maroon, Mauve, Navy, Onyx, Opal, Peach, Sorrel, Teal, Viridian, Grey, Sage, Coral, Iris, Ivy, Lavender, Silver, Marigold, Sapphire, Cyan, Lilac, Plum, Royal, Tiffany
The best part was lots of people joined in on the fun! I would get random texts or emails from old friends with different suggestions. I had people bring it up in conversation all the time. And one of my neighbors brought over this darling document she made for me:
Jake and I focused on the name "Skye" pretty early on. In fact we decided that we liked the name before we got pregnant (I wanted to make sure we had a boy and girl name that fit our theme before getting pregnant - I'm a planner!) It wasn't based on a particular person/character. But we've been hearing the name in different places lately. Like "Daisy/Skye" on Agents of Shield and even Skye on Paw Patrol. I loved that it was a pretty name and blue is such a lovely color. Jake and I don't tell our baby names beforehand (it's hard enough to agree on a name, we don't need everyone else's opinion). I really like this blog post too. I was worried that we would have 3 "S" names and only 1 "J" name. But Jaide is an independent soul. Plus Jake and I both have J names - so really it's 3 and 3.
The next question was - what would be her middle name? All the middle names we've chosen have been a family name. So it was time for Jake to pass on his name. Jake's first name is really "Alfred" - a family name that's been passed down. We thought about picking "Alfreda" but it was just too... German for us. So Jake suggested "Allie". We went through several spellings before Skye Allie was chosen. I LOVE her name and I hope she will too!
I realize that Skye Allie could be heard as "sky alley" - but what would you see in a sky alley? Jet engines, perhaps? Seems like an appropriate name for the offspring of two jet engine engineers!
Here are all the family connections for our little girls:
After we decided on Skye's name, I started seeing the color combo red/yellow/green/blue all over! I noticed our Vtech Spin and Learn Color Flashlight sings this song: "Red Green Yellow Blue, Let's follow the jungle crew!" Watch the first ten seconds of this video:

I noticed those colors all over our house:
Even our eyes are hardwired to see channels for these colors:
What great colors to have for our little crayon box!
