I realized that this is probably my last year where I can pick all the kids' costumes. Scarlett is at the age where she has strong opinions, but I can still sway her. Luckily she's not really interested in dressing up like Elsa (and we did the whole Ice Princess thing last year - trend setters!) So this year I wanted to do something that used their color names (Red=Scarlett, Yellow=Siena, Green=Jaide). After several vetoes from Jake, we finally settled on an idea.
First I found these online (it's so hard to find plain sweats in kids sizes)
Then I dyed them with Rit. Any ideas yet?
Next I added details with felt. Have you figured it out?
We are Care Bears!!! Scarlett's been watching Welcome to Care-A-Lot lately and I thought it would be a fun, family-friendly costume that would also be warm for trick-or-treating. I found instructions on a site and I used the Pellon EZ-Steam to iron the pieces together (except I just safety pinned mine and Jake's on).
Complete with authentic bum hearts.

Grumpy Bear
The week before Halloween we went to our Ward Halloween Party. Scarlett had so much fun that she wore herself out! We had to bring a soup or chili for the potluck dinner. Instead I brought homemade mac&cheese. Two huge pans full (it made a TON). It all got eaten! I even had a friend come tell me thanks for bringing it cause her daughter hates soups and almost had a melt down til they saw my dish. I think my mom has such a talent for knowing what food to bring to parties, she always knows what people will want to eat. I hope I can be that person for my kids too.
Off to the games... and yes, apparently we kiss pumpkins when we're done decorating them. Don't you?
The cake walk went much more smoothly than it did two years ago.
The twirls didn't really care about the games, they were just interested in running around the halls.
Trunk-or-treating:
A week later Scarlett and I went out trick-or-treating in our neighborhood. It was FREEZING. Literally. Like rain/sleet/cold/cold/cold. I decided the twirls wouldn't do well outside and I was surprised Scarlett lasted our entire street. Toward the end I had to hold her bucket so she could keep her hands warm. There were hardly any kids out, so our neighbors hooked Scarlett up! She was a happy little girl!
Grammy, Grumple and Aunt Jami were visiting for the holiday (more about that in a future post). Don't let that sad face fool you, the twirls loved opening the door.
Our spooky decorations (glow sticks inside empty TP rolls with wax paper).
The girls were smiling at my phone cause we were video chatting with Jake who had to work late that night :'-(.
Waiting for more trick-or-treaters.
I decided to unpack my decorations this year. I realized I need to start acquiring more to fill my mantle. But at least it's better than my Thanksgiving decorations (which consists of exactly one small turkey). Scarlett helped me make some "potions" to fill those bottles.
The girls all loved playing with the window clings. I got these cute decorations from my Grandma Seaver who knows I love Halloween more than the recommended amount. (thanks Grandma!)
I guess now it's time to start brainstorming for next year!

Love the costumes! I love that they're warm and that's part of the costume. So great. I seriously can't believe you can get your husband to dress up. I'll welcome advice on how to do that.
I've come to learn the secret of Fall decorating is all about the pumpkins. You can make them scary for Halloween with webs or spiders or whatever, then get rid of the spooky and the same decorations are fabulous for Thanksgiving. I also like any decorations that can be changed for seasons, like frames where you just switch the inside picture.
Oh yeah, and genius on the Mac & Cheese. What a great idea. I never think of those kinds of things, but I always want to be that thoughtful person. Don't know if you care, but I have an awesome, easy, 1 skillet, homemade mac & cheese recipe on my food blog. It makes me happy.
Yeah, I'd have to get paid sooooo much to get me to wear that.
Jake has a long history of wearing "interesting" outfits when the challenge arises
Haha - I love Jake's grumpy bear face! What a fun costume idea!
I can't believe you have fake giant bugs as decorations. Next year I can send you some real live giant cockroaches. They're all over the place outside here, and sometimes they come into the house. Super gross.
Awesome costumes! I love how you even painted their cheeks and noses. I think I've said it before, but you should really hire out your Halloween skills. You'd make a killing! Muah ah ah.
