Bad Habits

Scarlett has developed a few bad habits...

Man Made Rocks

Scarlett loves rocks.  Well the other day we were taking a shower and at the end I realized she had somehow snuck a bunch of rocks into the shower.  They weren't rocks.

Vamp Girl

When Jake picked up Scarlett from nursery today, he found out that she had bit a little girl!!!?!?!?!?!!  She bit me awhile ago, but I thought that the biting phase was over.  I would love any tips you have for biters!   I've heard of people biting their kids back to show them that it hurts, I'm not sure how that works when the only time she bites is when we're not around...???

Sharing Time?  Never!

Even when she and I are the only people home, she still doesn't like to share her strollers.  She uses one to push the other.  They often get tangled up - her response is to scream and cry til I fix it.  We're also working on that.

Slow Eater

When I first started dating Jake I was shocked at how long it took him to eat.  In the time it took him to eat a meal I would finish my dinner, do the dishes, check my facebook, and knit a sweater.  Well, he's overcome that habit (mostly from all my nagging) but apparently it's a genetic trait.  Scarlett takes FOREVER to eat.  In fact, the other day she took so long to eat her juicy apple slices that her fingers were pruney by the end!

Speaking of genetic traits, I've noticed that when she's falling asleep she tugs on her eyelashes and tries to pull them out.  Something that her Grumple does when he's stressed...

Mommy's Fault

I realize that not all of her habits are 100% from her creative toddler mind.  Several of her habits I think are my fault.  Like watching too much tv.  Notice I am taking this picture while I lay on the couch - I know, I've already written my "Mommy of the Year" speech.  Hey, at least she's taking notes!

Also, from the looks of these pictures it seems like she's always running around in a diaper.  Which is not the case.  Sort of.  This actually leads me to my final habit...

Diaper Pocket..

So occasionally when I change Scarlett's diaper I find little treasures that she's stowed in her "diaper pocket".  Tonight we were delighted with these little gems:

Which actually come from a cute game idea someone told us about (probably from Pinterest).  I cut a hole in a container lid then burned the edges so it was smooth.  She really likes putting all the little puffs away!  So simple but so fun!

Well, Jake and I were watching TV (I know, I know, TV is the devil, blah blah blah) and noticed Scarlett using her diaper pocket.  Luckily my phone was right next to me so I was able to capture this on film.  (It was dark so I had to use my camera light - so sorry it kind of washes her out)

Oh, I was busting with that video! That's so bad but so good!
And about Jacob's slow eating. I'm glad you've fixed it. Once, in the time it took to drive from his apartment in Provo to our parents' house in Draper, he ate half a Pepperidge Farms cookie. And not one of their big ones. The long tubular-shaped ones.

Ah, shower rocks. Isn't that a lovely treat?

As for the biting, I'm not sure anything works for that. Maybe a good, shocking holler from someone besides you. Of course, then she might hate nursery if she thinks the leaders are scary. I did chase one of our kids around so I could bite him, he sobbed and screamed (hello therapy...). I didn't bite him, but I think the idea of being bit and the terror of being chased was enough to scare him into some better behavior. I felt like a schmuck though.

Don't you love the things they keep in diapers? I found a bunch of pretzels once. A sick way to gather food storage...

As for the TV thing - there is no reason to beat yourself up for watching an educational show together. It isn't like you're parking her in front of CSI for hours on end. :-)

Our kids eat slow too, unless they have something pressing and wonderful to do after the food. I set a timer, and when it beeps I take the food away and send 'em to go wash up. Nothing encourages speedy eating like a deadline. And I've been doing it with my boys for years...Scarlet is probably old enough for that, especially when she has really had sufficient time to eat enough but has just been dawdling.

Love you guys!

Oh my gosh, me and my kids were all dying laughing with that video. Seriously has viral capabilities! And I love that the Glauser side of your family thought the puff balls were fine to keep, while you said to throw them away! Sounds about right.

I like the idea of a timer on dinner. I think I might try that. Captain takes about three seconds to eat, then ditches me to sit at the table begging my youngest to put something in her mouth for the next hour. Then we finally throw her food away and 2 hours later she's crying that she doesn't get a cookie because she didn't eat and now she wants her food back. Bleh.

And for the record, TV is fine. They'll have years of sitting in a classroom to come. Let the kids watch TV all stinking day right now if that's what you need. Obviously Scarlett is very advanced (since she's acting like a 2-year-old with the biting) so a few hours of non stimulating activity won't hurt the girl.

First: being a mom sounds pretty gross.

Second, laughed so, so hard at the video. Love her, love your reactions, love Jake cleaning up the puffs with a tissue, just loved the whole thing. So glad you preserved it for posterity. She'll hate it, but I think it's awesome.

Jenni, you crack me up. What a fun post. I admit, I think I've only had "rocks" in the tub once as a mother...and I hope NEVER to repeat that again! The timer is a great idea. I'm going to give that a try, since my sweet girls take FOREVER to eat too! As far as the biting goes, I feel your pain. Katie is my biter. Unfortunately, I never found a solution, but as she gets older, she does it less. So, maybe you'll get lucky and she'll just grow out of it!

Also, don't feel bad about the whole TV/lounging on the couch thing. We all do it at some point! I remember when Lizzy was just two, and I was pregnant with the twins, that was all that I ever did. She went camping with Willey once (I of course stayed home). She apparently didn't talk about me until she saw a couch in someones trailer....and she shouted - "Couch!!! Mommy!!!" It's a little embarrassing that the only thing that reminded her of me was a couch... I'm afraid I still spend way too much time with them watching TV, but I'm sure they'll turn out OK.

Anyway, thanks for reading my novel and thanks for the laughs!

Amen on the TV comments. I had some guilt about it on my first child, but by the time three rolled around, I was completely over it. I've heard great things about the timer, however it didn't work for our family. My kids were all too happy to be let down without finishing their food. And as for the biting, my mom gave my nursery leader permission to flick my cheek when I bit, and apparently it worked. Not that I'm recommending it, just another suggestion.

Stroller line: promising future career as a shopping cart gatherer at Costco?

Slow eating: family trait. Do Scarlett and Jacob at least swallow from time to time? Be grateful for that.

Diaper pocket video: belongs on America's Funniest Home Videos! (By the way, not from this side of the family!)

Just to clarify: I frequently send them from the table with unfinished meals, and I'm mean enough to make them wait until the next regularly scheduled meal time. It doesn't take 'em long to figure out that they need to eat when they can. And if they're consistently getting down without eating, I figure they're just not hungry. M almost never eats dinner, just drinks his milk, and he seems no worse for it.

I also kick them out if they're being rude or goofing off. If you're hungry you'll eat, and if you're not eating, you leave.

Can you believe that they STILL haven't called me the meanest mom??? :-)

Haaa! This is hilarious Jenni! The biting--nothing I have found works, but they do eventually outgrow it. Mom said I was a biter...and I haven't bit anyone in years! ;)

"Shower rocks" are no fun. Be glad you weren't taking a bubble bath together....been there, done that!

Great video! The girls are crying that you aren't still in CT!

Ella has watched WAY more TV than the others, and knew her ABC's and numbers much earlier. She's been the earliest to write her own name too. Ok, her name is ELLA so it's not that hard...but still...I don't think the TV has hurt her at all.

Oh, and Abby did the same thing with baby strollers. I found a double stroller & she liked it & it eliminated the stroller tangle!
